TEST QUESTION

OK, so did you read the last post.  If you did you might be able to answer this question:

What are perineal, peroneal, and perianal?

A - They are all the same, just typos and mispellings.
B - Two of them are between the legs.
C - Problems with this one causes numbness and a foot drop.
D - All of the above.
E - Both B & C.
F - None of the above.

[No cheating -- don't look down for the answer.  Decide now!]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The answer is.............................
E.  Both B & C are correct.  The perineal area is the region between the anus and the genitals, and the perianal area is the region around the anus.  The peroneal nerve is located from behind the knee down to the foot.  Problems with this nerve can cause both numbness and a foot drop (peroneal palsy).  Women in particular have a habit of crossing their legs at the knee, which often entraps the nerve resulting in the above problems.
Okay, I chose F and I'd like to rebut your answer. Because technically Peroneal doesn't describe a nerve. Peroneal means "pertaining to the Fibula or lateral portion of the leg." It could have been an artery, vein, nerve or even muscle. And since there is no option for just perianal (yes, I concur this is as you defined :) the answer should technically be F. None of the above. All in good fun. Keep them coming. PS I'm a med student, apology for being so nit-picky. lol
Thanks Randy for your input. As a med student, you indeed need to be nit-picky, which will help you pick the best answer. As a retired healthcare professional who has performed hundreds if not thousands of peroneal nerve conduction velocities, peroneal is an adjective to describe a particular nerve, although I will admit that it describes other anatomy in the area as well.
I would ask that you give the question just as written to some of your med school professors, in particular those whose fields are neurology and anatomy and ask them which is the best or correct answer. I look forward to your response. You may email me directly at uncutplus@gmail.com if you prefer rather than leaving a comment.
Please, please, please keep on questioning information placed before you, not just in medical school, but on a lifelong basis.
