Auguste Rodin

After my discussion of Michelangelo's David in an earlier post, you may realize that I really appreciate sculpture.  The earliest sculpture that I have seen is that of the Greeks in a museum in Athens.  Perhaps I will elaborate on that in another post, but today I want to discuss a modern sculptor's works.

Auguste Rodin was a famous French sculptor who lived from 1840 - 1917.  Several museums have been dedicated to his work including one in Philadelphia.  Probably his most well known works are The Thinker and The Kiss.  Actually the original inspiration for these works were part of the relief in Rodin's Gates of Hell based on Dante's Inferno.

You will notice The Thinker in the transom at the top over the doors.  Here are pictures of The Thinker and The Kiss:

Rodin himself said: "What makes my Thinker think is that he thinks not only with his brain, with his knitted brow, his distended nostrils and compressed lips, but with every muscle of his arms, back, and legs, with his clenched fist and gripping toes."

However, my favorite is one of his earliest works -- The Age of Bronze.  It is a lifesize depiction of a young man, and he was even accused of making the plaster from an actual young man.  That was not true as he actually carved it though he may have used young men as models of beauty which he wished to depict.

Many would argue that sculpture is very static and stationary since it is after all, statuary.  Personally, I do not agree since I see fluidity and motion, especially in this particular work.

Another great art form that I appreciate is ballet.  Choreographers seem to appreciate the motion in Rodin's sculpture, which is apparent in this beautiful ballet choreographed by Michael Smuin:

Was my Uncle Bi or Gay?

It seems that a lot of gay men talk about being molested (although some of them don't think of it as abuse) as a child by an older relative.  The question sometimes arises if that is what caused the man to be gay.  While I don't think so, it is my belief that we are born with our sexual orientation; perhaps being gay may be somewhat genetic.

Well my uncle lived on the family farm, never married, and seemed somewhat preoccupied with sex, or at least so it seemed to my childhood naivete.  He was "known" to date women, but it always seemed that they were chasing him and he was trying to escape them.  In addition to being a farmer, he was a carpenter by trade, and he often carved objects out of wood.  One of these objects was a beautiful piece of dark wood such as walnut whittled into the shape of a very large penis -- about 10 inches long and comparably large in girth.

As a child, he often took me off on various adventures, to go fishing, boating, and camping.  On one of these trips, we went down to the local river and he suggested that we go swimming.  When I protested innocently that I did not have a bathing suit, he said that there was no one around, we didn't need suits and could just skinny dip.  Once in the water which was very cold, I was complaining and wanting to get out.  He grabbed me and pulled me close to him and asked me if I was feeling the warmth of his piss.  Nothing more than that happened.

Also I remember sleeping with him in his bed in his log cabin during the summertime.  At the time, I was an early teen-ager while he lay close to me and told a few dirty jokes.  However, again he never went any further than that and did not touch me.

After he turned 60, he developed prostate cancer and in addition to the medicines he was given, the surgeons castrated him supposedly to arrest the cancer.  One afternoon we were walking on the farm, he pulled out his dick and said watch this as he pissed a blue color resulting from the medications.  On another occasion when we were alone, he pulled down his trousers and underwear and had me feel his empty ballsack.

I have a much older male cousin who also spent many summer vacations on the farm with my uncle in earlier years before me, and I have wanted to ask him if he also had any similar gay-like experiences with my uncle.  This cousin is married and I have never had the courage to ask him.

Somehow, I believe my uncle certainly had gay tendencies, but out of respect for his sister and me, he knew where to draw the line.  I'll never know for sure.

What Is The Right Thing To Do?

What is right?  What is wrong?  Do you always know the answer?  Is it black and white, or are there shades of gray?  On some subjects, we have differing opinions on what is right and wrong.

On this blog, I have maintained that it is WRONG to circumcise male babies, and that it is purely a black and white issue, with no shades of gray.  No reason justifies it, even religion.

Other blogs are concerned with bisexuality -- especially married men with children, who feel compelled to have relationships with other men.  Is it better for the married men to remain married for the sake of their children or professional life?  Or would it be better for the men to get a divorce and pursue their gay partnerships.  Which decision makes them happy?  What is the best decision for the children?  What is the best decision for the wife?  Maybe she would be understanding and want to keep the marriage intact, despite knowing that her husband was seeing men on the side.  Is there a right answer to this question?

A number of other blogs are being written by young gays -- in high school, college, or just starting a professional life.  One of their most pressing questions is "Do I come out?"

What about sexuality in general?  Are we straight, gay, or bisexual from birth and we should learn to accept that reality?  Religion and many cultures say no, that only hetereosexuality is normal.  But why for centuries have their been homosexuals?  Could that be a part of the plan?

Is religion always on the right side?  What about the Inquisition?  What about Pope infallibility?  What about religion and war?  What about religion preaching intolerance?  If you support religion especially with your monetary donations, are you also supporting some of the questions just raised?

Clearly some questions do NOT have easy straightforward black and white answers!  If you are interested in pursuing more about philosophy and morality, I highly recommend that you view Professor Sandel's lectures:  Justice: What is the right thing to do?  This is an actual series of lectures given at Harvard University and now being broadcast on PBS.

What is harder than morning wood?  Why is an erect penis referred to being as hard as wood or as steel.  Why is it called a boner?  Does it have a bone in it?

My mother was a student nurse when she was in her early 20's before she married my dad.  I don't know if she had any first hand knowledge about a man's penis, whether it be soft or hard.  But as part of her training, she had to scrub as an operating room nurse; she was assigned to prepare the surgical instruments for an upcoming operation -- the amputation of a man's penis.  So on the tray she placed a pair of rongeurs, which are used for cutting bone!

Needless to say, she became the laughing stock of the surgical team.  My guess is that she was still a virgin, had no experience, and planned on being prepared!  At least, she didn't include the orthopedic saw among the instruments.  She would tell this story on herself and say that she knew better, but had only made a mistake in selecting the instruments.  Yea, right! Surely, this is what she imagined:

You know we only have one body, but a lot of redundancy. Redundancy means having a back-up. Our bodies have a lot of redundancies – two of almost everything. We have a pair of brain hemispheres. It’s how you use your brain that’s important; are you left-brained or right-brained? Dolphins really know how to use their brains; one hemisphere sleeps while the other hemisphere is awake. That way he is always alert to swim and get away from killer whales. I wish I were a dolphin – just think how accomplished I could be if I could stay awake 24 hours a day without insomnia.

We also have a pair of eyes and a pair of ears. Seeing and hearing only requires one, but seeing in three dimensions and listening in stereo requires a pair. If someone claps over here on this side of the room, we know the direction the sound is coming from, because the ear nearest the sound hears it the loudest. Put a patch over one of your eyes as you drive down the highway – that car is how far in front of you?

We only have one nose, but a pair of nares; only one mouth, but we speak out of both sides of it; and I even have a double chin, unlike the square jaw of this beautiful man.

Our bodies have a pair of lungs, a pair of kidneys, and a pair of breasts. A newborn boy is very happy to find out there are two of them, and worships them the rest of his life. Unfortunately, when a pair of twins are born, they each have only one. Pity the poor triplets and quadruplets; somebody has to go hungry.

There is only one belly button, but a pair of sex organs. Procreation must go on.

We have a pair of legs, and a pair of feet.

Let’s talk a little about the clothing we put on to cover all these pairs up. We put on a pair of shoes, and a pair of socks – a left one and a right one – that I understand. But a pair of pants? It’s only ONE article of clothing! A pair of trousers? A pair of shorts?

Boxers are plural. How about a jock strap? We refer to it in the singular, but it protects a pair of balls and exposes a pair . . . of cheeks!

Let’s digress and talk about jewelry. Most of the ladies wear a pair of earrings and so do some of the men, though they usually wear only one, but have to be careful to wear it on the correct side, which may not be the right side.  There are nose rings, pierced tongues, nipple rings, and Prince Albert’s.

What is a Prince Albert? It is a ring through the underside of the penis. Some guys think that the added stimulation the ring will provide causes their equipment to be displayed more prominently; but they have got it all wrong. You see, Prince Albert lived in the prudish Victorian period. He was married to Queen Victoria. You just have to learn your Latin. O.D. is right eye and O.S. is left eye. They stand for oculi dexter and oculi sinister. Now the Latin word for right is dexter, from which we get dexterous and dexterity. If we are confused, everything is right or ambidextrous. Olde English uses the same word for right and correct, as in “You are right.” Therefore your right side is your correct side. You think I am kidding? Your left is BAD, and to prove it, the Latin word for left is sinister, and we all know that is where SIN comes from. Back when I was in school, and I know that seems like a long time ago to all you young studs, the second-grade teacher, who taught cursive, carried around a wooden ruler and hit your left hand if you tried to write with it. It was the WRONG hand, not the right hand. Only 10% of people are sinister – the left handed ones! You know, there are all kinds of Latin words for positions: ventral and rostral (top and bottom); anterior and posterior (front and back); distal and proximal (far and near). So are you a rostral or a ventral? The rostral is always on top – just remember being on top of the rostrum.

The electrical field of the cornea in the eye is positive and the retina is negative. How can you remember that? Memorize “It’s positive to look forward, and negative to look back.
